8-Hour Runway Wait for Flight at O'Hare June 3, 2000 8-Hour Runway Wait for Flight at O'Hare By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO, June 3 -- About 200 passengers on a United Airlines flight bound for Washington, D.C., sat on the runway at O'Hare International Airport for more than eight hours on Friday. Flight 1806 was scheduled to take off at 1:44 p.m., but was delayed until 9:53 p.m. The plane, a Boeing 777, was one of hundreds delayed by thunderstorms on the East Coast, said a spokesman for United Airlines, Kurt Ebenhoch. "There was only one flight path open and that was through St. Louis, and priority was given to flights already in the air," Mr. Ebenhoch said. He said air traffic controllers continued to delay the plane. The plane was forced to return to the gate twice, once to refuel and once to replace crew members who had been on duty too long under Federal Aviation Administration rules. No meals were available to the passengers during the delay, but the flight crew passed out granola bars that were stored on the plane for unexpected delays. United decided not to cancel the flight because other storm delays would have made it difficult for the passengers to make other plans. Some passengers were allowed to make brief trips into the terminal when the plane was called back, but most remained on board, Mr. Ebenhoch said. Last year, winter weather led to a similar flight delay at Detroit Metropolitan Airport, with passengers stranded aboard a Northwest Airlines flight for more than eight hours. The incident led to a class-action lawsuit filed by passengers inconvenienced by the delay. Copyright 2000 The New York Times Company
