JC - well, sure, any suggestion that SUNW is or has been less than OPEN in the java process brings out the faithful in defense. As to how to negotiate around MSFT, I already said that there is nothing wrong with SUNW controlling their IP - I just object to all this crap about how the process is "open" when it's not.

Publishing the information, or the source code, or any other details does not make java open - not if no one can actually change anything. As you probably know, much of MSFT's source code is available - on a read-only basis - to many groups of developers. That does not make it "open"...

Many of the people I know who were (or are) on the java bandwagon are not on the SUNW bandwagon and are very disappointed that SUNW has essentially abandoned any commitment to actually open java up. And all of the impassioned rhetoric you post will not change the treatment of the standards bodies and the well intentioned people who actually believed SUNW.

Of course, the excuse offered by the faithful is that SUNW had to keep java close to keep the borg from polluting it. That's pretty much the same reasoning provided by IBM, Digital, and many others over the years, although the "threat" changed.

The reality is that SUNW is no more open than MSFT - try and publish a derivative work and see how quickly you end up in court.

As far as LEAPs go, I assume you are not referring to my SUNW LEAPs, but those are finally above water after an extended submarine tour.
