Now all they have to figure out is how to best get around the superparamagnetic effect in the next few years.


Right now the industry is going from 10GB to 15GB per platter. Unless it's like obscenity -- you'll only know it when you see it -- the superparamagnetic limit is anywhere from, what, 60-70GB to 120GB per 3.5" platter. Does this make the Hitachi vertical recording milestone (2 years time-to-market) more important than it seemed at the time? One interesting fact about the Hitachi announcement is that they reached the major milestone out of one Hitachi research lab with an annual budget of about $30 million.
