Tunica - Furukawa's own claim to optical greatness seem to be somewhat less grandiose than Gabelli's "global dominance in optical electronics" statement.

Furukawa Electric, which understands light and optical fibers well, is proud to be a leader of the industry of terminal component technologies.

Gabelli's comment that Furukawa was the original owner of JDS Uniphase seems a bit overdone as well. Furukawa was an important early investor in JDS Fitel but there are currently no representatives from Furukawa on the JDSU board. JDSU thanked the president of Furukawa and some departing board members on page 4 of their 1999 annual report. - peggylynn

I believe Furukawa was also the primary owner of SDLI's recent acquisition, PIRI.
