Whoa! Thanks for that ... a moment of Mechanical Understanding. Offset asymmetric excenter in the drive = wheel wobble. The bearings on the drive wheels must have been a) beefy puppies and b) replaceable wear items.

Diesel electrics are not entirely lacking in poetry. The genius of mechanical-electric-mechanical again is this: No Clutch. High torque from 0 mph. That counts for something.

Of course, Steam gave high static torque too, and it didn't need no steenkeeng clutch aside from "tractive ratio". I bet a spoonful of Moly-Graph on the rails could boost the tractive ratio into the hundreds. Betcha greasing the rails on a grade is a Federal felony on the books somewhere. We need our legal contingent to comment on this.
