Joe,

I recall that Cyrix MediaGx used (or planned to use) compression for the buffer, resulting in about 1/10 of memory usage on average, and than decompression to feed the RAMDAC.

The video refresh bandwidth is a small portion of the required bandwidth for the graphics subsystem. Texture memory and framebuffer accesses suck up large amounts of bandwidth, and these too will have to be shared with the CPU.
