Trace complete.

Offhand, I would say that the problems appear to be occurring inside Level3, or the point where Level3 meets AlterNet.

Cheers,

Simon.

Mark,

Take a good look at your first trace that is from cyber to you. Cyber hands off to uunet with no problems. uunet bounces it around 4 different routers in dallas - but these are probably all siting in the same room and cause very little delay - and then hands it off to level3. Level3 bounces through 9 different routers in five different cities before it gets to you. This is probably where the problems are happening. It is taking the local instead of the express. The fact that level3 has no direct connection between dallas and nyc would make me look for a new isp.

If you look at the trace going from you to cyber it is put on the backbone in nyc and then has 7 backbone hops three in nyc and 2 in houston before it goes direct into cyber. This is a much cleaner and faster route as it is going across country in just one jump on uunet with is faster and more robust then level3's internal network.

By the way the ms delays when you do a trace route are close to meaningless. Most routers put a trace route packet at the very bottom of the priority and respond to them when they feel like it. They really tell you nothing about how fast a real packet will route through the network. A ping is the best way to tell the network delays to a node and back.

One thing that we all have to remember is that the internet is still far from being a reliable means of communication. The day will come it is still a couple of years off.

For some of us it would be better to not use the internet at all and just pay up for a frame relay connection direct to you broker.

Boy, Mark - I would almost die for those ms's! How about you connect to me and I share my profits whit you?

The traces I have run and Cyber sent to me show almost every one well over 100ms - some over 300!
