LRR, I still think it is far too late, already, to be able to hide and any ETs observing us, or discovering the existence of Earth at some future time, would be able, I would think, to detect a faked catastrophe. Also, as you indicate, for all we know, there could already be ETs observing us from the perspective of benign neglect while they try to gauge whether we, ourselves, will become dangerous, which our history indicates we might, to anything beyond our own planet (as stated earlier we have already considered detonating an A-Bomb on the Moon). They might even divert an Earth killing asteroid every ten thousand years or so in the hope that we will eventually be able to overcome our Warrior mindset and our unbelievably war filled history.
