Yes there are USB CF and MMC readers,
They are MUCH faster than parallel port, and more convenient than hooking your camera up to the PC if you leave them plugged in all the time, which most people do I think.
Cost, $30 - $50 retail.

As a non-scientific test, dragging and dropping 42 files totalling 16Mb from a 32Mb CF card to my hard disc took less than 5 seconds.

Everyone with a digi cam should get one. It also means you dont have to mess about installing often bug-ridden camera software on your PC.

"3) SanDisk doesn't quite own the market yet, and due to the fact that they are fabless they may never own it."

You may want to read this in reference to your post regarding a fab and Sandisk.

Doren,

1) Are there USB/firewire/etc. read/write machines for this tech for both Macs and PCs and if so how much?

The CompactFlash USB ImageMate sells for $22.00 on the Internet. I assume this aggressive pricing has to do with Lexar's lost leaders with a USB connector included at a nominal extra cost over the CompactFlash card.

I have my USB CompactFlash ImageMate velcro'd onto the top of my PC tower. It is there permanently as I use my camera several times a month and don't want to mess with undoing the connections.

I understand there will be a MMC to CF adapter in the future. SanDisk may be cautious in releasing this device as affordable MMC could cannibalize the CF market. (NOTE: Should CF commoditize and the '987 defense falter this could be a planned obsolescence for CompactFlash.)

I have no doubt that firewire devices are in the making given SanDisk's investment in SMDK (SmartDisk).

Glad to have you here, Doren. Since you are close to the music business I wanted to pick your brains about production costs for albums in the digital age. Also, according to the latest articles I have read it looks like the music industry is headed for singles rather than full-fledged albums. There could be a lot of "one-hit wonders" out there that could produce a great single, but not have enough good material for a whole album. This sounds like a new paradigm for bands that are just starting out. A single studio session to record a 3'30" single can't be that spendy, can it?
