ETI conjecture is fun and exciting to think about, but as you said, we haven't yet learned not to eat each other. There is a lot of real work to do on Earth, so I will leave the outer space stuff to those with time and inclination. We should have our children writing messages of peace to each other- forget the aliens Well another variation was school kids doing it as a Time Capsule kind of project with messages being sent to kids in our future society. But whatever, the project would be primarily symbolic and, above all, aimed at helping move ahead the "real work" you refer to which still needs to be done here and now.
