The rocks we use are rather flat, they are pieces of slate, which I have used to make a little wall for an herb bed. Wouldn't the straw cover them?

In my experience, red pepper does not keep cats from using a plant bed as a litter box, but maybe squirrels are more sensitive.

Thank you, CobaltBlue, but I'm afraid that would not work in this case. You see, this is a circular bed covered in
pine straw, wrapped around the pecan tree. I'm afraid that rocks would look out of place here! I can, however, use this idea in a backyard, less formal area.


How about just using rocks for protection until you lantana are established.
