It almost makes one sympathetic toward the mainstream media

I had forgotten how down I used to be on the mainstream media. It's been perhaps 20 years since I've spoken to a reporter other than on background. I got tired of them never getting it quite right. And when I read an article on a subject that I know, I often find significant errors. Defending the mainstream media is not comfortable for me, but compared to the alternative, they look pretty good.

I just can't help feeling that anyone who is simultaneously and constantly attacked by extremists on both sides has to be doing something right.

I've never found all that much bias in the mainstream press. I recall I used to get really irate when articles on proposed tax changes used the word "reform" for making the tax system more graduated whereas I thought reform would mean making it flatter. Now that all the talk about change is toward the flat tax or a national sales tax, I don't see the word "reform" any more.

I think you're right. The mainstream press gets criticized from both sides, which is a good sign.
