When I was in college, being opposed to or suspicious of government placed one automatically on the left.

I was thinking about something similar a little while ago while I was posting to Michael. All the links we have here to extremist media are on the right. I was trying to find an example of a left-wing diatribe and couldn't recall when I had seen one on the net. I was having to resort to an old clip from a local paper. Are there really more right-wingers than left? Or just more on the internet? Or just on SI?

Enough for now. The Blazers/Lakers game is too good to not pay attention.

"It is easier to oppose than to propose, and easier to propose than to implement"

Yes, the opposition [in the british parliamentary sense] always has the easier job ... they can sit back and wait for mistakes and criticise in wild abandon, as they don't have to actually do anything ... and should they make it eventually to power, they aren't 'pure, consistent, and moral' any more because they've sold their principles to make the alliances that got them the power for which they will be criticised with wild abandon by the new opposition, ad nauseam ... in a way like the struggles between Bronze Age farmers and nomads, the farmers would build up fields and granaries and houses and the nomads would ride in, stick spears in the farmers, and eat hearty ... until they got fat and lazy and then new nomads came along.

Still, it's the best system we know of ... and we can't stop opposing just because of the truism that to do so is facile ... there is the odd intelligent proposal presented by oppositions as well ... 'rule of law' was once such a proposal ...
