A lot of people on this board have been proclaiming that government respect for individual liberty has deteriorated under the current administration, and that this administration is more willing than its predecessors to use force against its constituents. They recite the words Clinton...Ruby Ridge...Waco...Miami almost as a mantra, so it is interesting to note that one element in the mantra predates Clinton by a considerable margin.

In reality, of course, the US government, whether conservatives or liberals have been in control, has never hesitated to use force to get its way, and there is no real trend toward an increase in such cases. It is also, in large part, a matter of perspective: I suspect that a lot of the people howling (not necessarily here) about the excessive use of force in the Elian case, in Waco, or in Ruby Ridge were applauding when it was a bunch of leftist hippie demonstrators who were getting their heads busted.
