Re: I am extremely UNDERWHELMED by AMD's release so far.

Kash,

It's 6:15am in Germany, the Xetra doesn't open for another 2 hours 45 minutes. Sanders is on Squak box tomorrow in the 8:40am.

There's still hope...

Thunderbird shouldn't have K6-III-like "issues" with L2 cache

"Redundant Columns
To improve yield, the cache includes redundant columns. Redundant columns improve yield by allowing defective memory cells to be excluded from the cache without sacrificing the overall integrity of the cache. The entire array can be quickly validated during manufacturing using a built-in self test (BIST)."

Kash,
I understand your deception.

But lets try to read under the lines... if the entry point is now 750 MHz, do you really think the production to top out at 1 GHz?
AMD is a business, not a magician that want to impress the investors. AMD could have released 1.3 GHz on lower volumes but they'd have to drop down the price of all lower speed grades. As I own a lot of june option I would have preferred the magic trick rather than the extra earnings in Q2 but I think I understand AMD's strategy. I also think we don't want intel to feel trapped and to start spamming about their magic-Willy.

AMD will probably announce others speed grades in mid-july. We can still hope for a 1.3 or 1.4 demo this week. The stock WILL test 100 today. This release is and will continue to make a lot of mediatic noise.

Unfortunately Globex is a littlebit red...

Have a nice day,

Max

The performance improvement was not great - just OK.
And only releasing 700Mhz to 1Ghz Athlons from dresden simply SUCKS."

I agree. It will be very disappointing if they do not release a volume 1.1 GHz part.

Kash,

<I am extremely UNDERWHELMED by AMD's release so far.>

It is underwhelming all right. I am surprised that even 1.1s are not announced. "Why?" is an interesting question only AMD marketing/management can explain.

<The performance improvement was not great - just OK.>

I thought the numbers were fine given the limitations of the infrastructure (Anand's review highlights the issues with having VIA as the main platform for high end).

<And only releasing 700Mhz to 1Ghz Athlons from dresden simply SUCKS.>

There is something very interesting going on here. The voltages have been dropped back to 1.75V. Also, good to see nothing below 750 (the home shopping channel stuff seems to be clearance deal). Why is AMD holding back on the higher speeds is somewhat baffling.

<Almost everybody was expecting at least ONE speed grade improvement with the Cu release although some folks were even hyperventilating about a 1.5Ghz release.

Should be an interesting day tomorrow!!!

I suspect we may end lower.>

This may be the somewhat bad news in the context of this thread but beyond this thread, the street will see Dresden shipments as a positive and I doubt if anyone is looking carefully at the MHz.

Chuck

Kash, that would be me. Looks like I won't need a paper bag to stop hyperventilating, unless Jerry announces something in his Dresden announcement. Bummer
