Eric, Re: Updated Athlon FAQ

Highlights with my comments/questions in brackets:

Q4:How long will you continue to produce the original AMD Athlon processors?

A4:AMD is working with our system partners to manage their transition to the new AMD Athlon processor with performance enhancing cache memory. We expect the original version of the AMD Athlon processor to be available to end users into the third quarter. [Upgrade options for current computers? Since TBirds are about 20% larger than Classics I guess the $/mm^2 may still make the Classics a good production item even though they will not command the same prices. How long will Intel keep Katmais around? Though Intel's position may be more related to availability of 0.18 vs 0.25 equipment.]

Q5:At what clock speeds will the new AMD Athlon processor with performance enhancing cache memory be offered? What kind of clock speeds can we expect to see for the remainder of 2000?

A5:The new AMD Athlon processor will be offered at the following clock speeds: 1,000, 950, 900, 850, 800 and 750MHz. AMD is dedicated to providing users with the ultimate computing experience. AMD plans to continue to increase the frequency (MHz) and performance of the AMD Athlon processor to deliver on this goal, and expects to stay competitive in the marketplace for the foreseeable future. AMD will announce future speed upgrades when it is appropriate.

Q15:What do the AMD codenames mean?

A15:
?Mustang?

Enhanced version of AMD Athlon processor with reduced core size, lower power requirements, and up to 1MB of on-chip, performance-enhancing L2 cache memory. Manufactured on a 0.18 micron copper process technology. Multiple derivatives of the Mustang core are planned to address the requirements of the high-performance server/workstation, value/performance desktop and mobile markets. [Reduced core size from layout? Must be if still only 0.18 micron]

?Corvette?

Enhanced version of AMD Athlon processor based on ?Mustang? core with reduced core size, lower power requirements and support for mobile features. Will represent the first AMD Athlon mobile offering. Manufactured on a 0.18 micron copper process technology.

Q17:When do you plan on supporting a 266MHz front side bus?

A17:AMD plans to add support for a 266MHz front side bus in 2H 2000. [This is a pretty wide time span consider it starts now, ie. from 1 to 7 months from now]
