Wind River Unveils First Complete Java Architecture for Development, Deployment and Content Management of Internet Appliances
First Offering of the Tornado for Internet Appliances Architecture Announced; Shrinks Time to Market, Eases Development of Internet Appliances ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 5, 2000-- Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND - news), a leading provider of software and services for smart devices in the Internet age, today announced the Tornado© for Internet Appliances architecture, the first-of-its-kind client/server Java technology-based architecture for development, deployment, and content management of Internet appliances. Wind River also announced beta availability of the first element of the architecture, Tornado for Internet Appliances 1.0 Professional edition, which includes all the necessary components for developers to more quickly and easily deliver an Internet appliance to market.
``The merger of Wind River and Integrated Systems was built around the desire to better meet our customer's technology and time-to-market requirements,'' said Tom St. Dennis, president and CEO of Wind River. ``Tornado for Internet Appliances is the first solution product resulting from this merger and our follow-on acquisition of AudeSi Technologies. It is a great example of how our new organization has come together to create cutting-edge solutions for specific market needs.''
With Internet appliance shipments projected to rise from 11 million units in 1999 to 89 million units (compound annual growth rate of 35%) by 2004 (IDC), developers of TV-based Internet appliances, web pads, and Internet screen phones need complete development solutions to meet consumer demand. Internet appliances are extremely price sensitive and any additional time spent in development increases costs and decreases the chances of success. For this reason, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) must avoid time-consuming or resource-constraining development cycles. In addition, as technology advances and content providers begin to deliver services via PersonalJava-technology-based applications to Internet appliances, Internet service providers (ISPs) and network operators must also be able to manage the Internet appliances that connect to the network.
Easing Development Challenges, Enabling Innovation
The Tornado for Internet Appliances architecture is tailored to the requirements of Internet appliance developers, Internet service providers (ISP), and network operators. The first release, Tornado for Internet Appliances 1.0 Professional, includes a client application solution. Future releases will incorporate server software components and a complete turnkey hardware reference design.
Tornado for Internet Appliances 1.0 Professional, available as a beta version in July, solves many of the design challenges OEMs face today. It includes the WindStorm(TM) tools, which leverage innovative Java technology from AudeSi Technologies. The WindStorm Simulator allows OEMs to start on product development immediately by simulating their final product while hardware is still in development. The WindStorm Device Management Framework enables appliances to be remotely controlled or monitored, and includes mechanisms for seamless updatability of applications and services to the devices, as well as a suite of pre-built plug-ins for additional device functionality.
Tornado for Internet Appliances 1.0 Professional also includes Wind River's Personal JWorks(TM) Internet Appliance Kit, a fully integrated package that provides a complete PersonalJava platform on top of the VxWorks© real-time operating system, as well as a complete Internet applications tool suite consisting of embedded web browser, email client, and personal information manager.
The server software components of Tornado for Internet Appliances, available in Q4 of this year, allow ISPs and network operators to enable device management, application updates, and product monitoring. The hardware reference design, also available in Q4, provides immediate time-to-market savings for OEMs by providing a foundation for developers unfamiliar with the intricacies of Internet appliance design or for OEMs with severely constrained time-to-market requirements.
``Emerging markets offer opportunities to new entrants who move aggressively and a substantial portion of Wind River's customers want to take advantage of the opportunity in the Internet appliance space,'' said J.C. Sarner, vice president and general manager of the Wind River Consumer business unit. ``Offering these developers a pre-integrated, innovative, complete software platform, together with a hardware reference design provides tremendous value in their efforts to develop smart, connected devices.''
``In order for us to be the first to market, we needed to quickly and easily bring our idea from concept to reality,'' said Rich Katzmann, chairman and CEO for goReader, Inc., the first and only e-book company to offer electronic content on a portable device specifically designed for the higher education market. ``goReader chose Wind River software for our unique e-book because the value chain they offer, with proven technology, support, and services, is unmatched. With a solution like Tornado for Internet Appliances, Wind River is providing an even stronger value proposition for Internet appliance developers. It makes it much easier to focus on our core value-add and get our product out the door quickly so we can be one up on the competition.''
``Wind River has historically been a strong supporter of Java technology for embedded applications,'' said Curtis Sasaki, director of product marketing, Consumer Technologies, Sun Microsystems. ``It is important to the success of the Java platform to have companies like Wind River continue to supply innovative solutions for leading-edge markets like the Internet appliance space.''
