Karen,
The objective of this Miami family and the CANF is to keep Elian and his Dad here forever. They will never give up their cause. A member of the CANF laughed on FOX news that the American court system is the best because it is allowing them to keep this case open even though they have NO LEGAL rights to Elian.

OT-"Grandparents Rights" are wrong-SJC favorable ruling

Actually, that SLC ruling will affect US families across the country much more readily than the Elian case. There is no shortage of terrible cases where a controlling, abusive parent (now a "grandparent") is seeking to control their child (now a parent themselves), by forcing their will upon the family and mandating unsupervised visits, primarily for self-gratification and to satisfy their hunger to hurt. A lot of old emotional wounds have been ripped open by compliant, spineless state courts - the Francisci case in New Jersey is a particularly bad one that I read about. Hopefully that family and others like them will realize relief soon as a result of this ruling.

The Washington law was unconscionable, and if it had been upheld by the SJC, would have opened the floodgates of "grandparents" petitioning the courts for mandated, unsupervised visitation with children. This would have resulted IMHO in an exodus out of the country by familes whose parents have a history of physical, emotional, even sexual abuse from their parents (now "grandparents"). Yes, the stakes were and are that high...even with the favorable SJC ruling I wonder if the justices fully understood what was at stake.
