Dorine, looks like freedom of speech is being curtailed in a few different ways.

Democrats Furious: Force Ouster of Miami Radio Host
Jack Thompson
Friday, June 9, 2000
This past Sunday Donato Dalrymple and I were on Miami Spanish talk radio station WQBA-AM to talk with the host, Gustavo Roca, for two hours about the Elian tragedy.
My role was to explain to the audience the missteps by Elian's legal team, headed by Kendall Coffey.

Immediately after the show, Mr. Roca, the host who fled Castro's Caribbean Alcatraz, told Donato and me: "You watch. This show will cause a huge sensation in this community, and I will be fired. I have taken on the Democratic Party power elite that put Kendall Coffey on this legal team."

Sure enough, Roca was fired yesterday because, he says, I started the long-needed scrutiny of Team Coffey.

So, to tell the story of his termination, Roca was interviewed last night on an even more influential Spanish language talk station in Miami, WWFE (670-AM), invited by the show's host Sasha, who had me on her show twice this week. She is a courageous and true advocate for Elian's interests, as you are about to see.

After Roca's interview by Sasha, all hell broke loose. The wife of Armando Gutierrez, the man who is the spokesman for Elian's Miami relatives, called in to the show and launched into a hysterical tirade against Jack Thompson, against Sasha the host, and against anyone who would criticize Team Coffey. Sasha, after repeatedly and politely attempting to interrupt Mrs. Gutierrez's rant, hung up on her and asked her to call back if she could control herself.

Enter now the station owner, Jorge Rodriguez, who immediately called the show and took over the show, attacking his host for allowing me to criticize Coffey's ineffectual legal lapdance with the 11th Circuit. (Pause and ask yourself if you've ever heard an English language radio station owner call and attack his own host on the air? Welcome to Miami!)

Owner Rodriguez would not allow his host to get in a word edgewise, and the show ended with Sasha in tears, who, while driving home was slammed into by a car running a red light, pinning her car up against the side of a building.

Fortunately, the courageous and soon-to-be terminated Sasha is physically all right but emotionally crushed.

Why is she upset? Because in Miami the free flow of ideas about Elian's legal predicament has given way to intimidation of critics and of those who give them voice. Gustavo Roca said it all: "Here we are, trying to help Elian, and we run into tactics that remind me of Castro's Cuba."

Why all the hullabaloo at WWFE last night?

Here's the reason: Democratic Party hacks, many of whom control Uncle Lazaro and are closely connected with the legal team headed by Kendall Coffey, control the spending for party advertising.

This is an election year and the Democratic Party will spend big bucks on the local radio show ? but only if the stations don't cause unrest among the Cuban-Americans and keep their mouths shut about how Elian was given away to Castro.

The amazing thing is how brazen the legal team headed by Coffey has been in throwing the legal case by failing to file proper motions and even pretending they had won the latest legal round in the 11th Circuit!

As Alan Dershowitz has stated, Coffey, with all of his conflicts of interests, can't even be Elian's attorney. Any decent man would have stepped aside long ago and admitted he failed.

You can say this for Judas: he may have taken his thirty shekels of silver, but at least he exited quickly. He didn't run around saying he had done a good deed by his betrayal. The Judas types around Uncle Lazaro have no shame.
