Optimal Robotics announces UK expansion for U-Scan self-checkout systems - Optimal to exhibit at the Retail Solutions Show June 6-8, Birmingham, England

MONTREAL, Quebec--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 6, 2000--Optimal Robotics Corp. (NASDAQ: OPMR) and Retec Europe Ltd today announced their intention to enter into a licensing agreement for the distribution of U-Scan(R) self checkouts in the United Kingdom. This agreement will initiate Optimal's penetration into the European market, where it will continue to expand in the coming years.

U-Scan(R) enables shoppers to scan, bag and pay for their own groceries with little or no assistance from store personnel. More than 600 U-Scan(R) systems and over 2,400 checkout lanes are already installed across the United States.

"We believe that our expansion into the UK market is an important step for Optimal and demonstrates our commitment to being the market leaders in self-checkout. The UK provides us with the opportunity to build a marketplace for self-checkout in Europe and to create a leadership position, as we have done in the US," said Henry M. Karp, Optimal's President and Chief Operating Officer.

Retec's director John Cole stated, "We are excited by the opportunity that U-Scan(R) presents for self-checkout in the UK, and we are confident that the technology will respond to the needs of retailers and consumers alike. Optimal's self-checkout products are clearly the standard for self-checkout in North America, and we look forward to extending that position into the UK."
