My recollection was of disbarment. It would not surprise me to find that he saw the handwriting on the wall and resigned to avoid that additional humiliation. JLA

Nixon tried to withdraw his NY license but the extreme Left Nixon haters would have none of that.

Nixon was prevented from that and they disbarred him. Remember, the current Clinton defenders say you can't be disbarred for acts done in your capacity as a non-lawyer. I'm sure the same types were arguing the opposite concerning Nixon.
