Alcatel Spotlights Industry-Leading ADSL Technology in the DSL Forum's Interoperability Showcase at SuperComm 2000
BusinessWire, 06/5/2000 15:57

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 5, 2000--

Alcatel's SpeedTouch(TM) ADSL Modems,
DSLAMs and DynaMiTe ADSL Chipset Benefits on Display at DSL Forum's Booth

As the world's leading provider of Digitial Subscriber Line (DSL) technology, Alcatel will spotlight the interoperability benefits of its ADSL technology at DSL Forum's Interoperability Showcase (booth No.227) at SuperComm 2000.
Alcatel's SpeedTouch(TM) ADSL Modems, ATM Subscriber Access Multiplexer (ASAM) and DynaMiTe ADSL Chipsets are included as part of this public demonstration of ADSL interoperability. In addition, the newest member of the Alcatel family, Newbridge Networks, acquired by Alcatel on May 25, 2000, will be participating in the interoperability showcase as well.

"Alcatel has a long-standing commitment to open standards and interoperability among the numerous suppliers of ADSL systems and technology," said Hal Thorne, group vice president for Alcatel Access Systems. "The DSL Forum Showcase is an excellent venue for demonstrating how Alcatel's ADSL equipment and technology works seamlessly with equipment from other vendors and suppliers."

Alcatel recently announced that it has shipped one million central office DSL lines to its worldwide customer base during the first four months of this year, bringing Alcatel's installed based to a total of 2.7 million lines. By the same measure, Alcatel's SpeedTouch ADSL Modem shipments reached 190,000 units worldwide in the first quarter of 2000, a 375 percent increase over the same period one year earlier. Additionally, in the first quarter of 2000, Alcatel Microelectronics supplied 1.7 million ADSL chipsets worldwide. The Alcatel chipset is featured in a large number of products participating in this year's interoperability showcase.
About Alcatel DSL - The world's leading supplier of DSL systems with market leadership in its Asynchronous Transfer Mode Subscriber Access Multiplexer (ASAM) and Litespan family of products, Alcatel has supplied industry-standard end-to-end ADSL solutions since 1996. Alcatel's DSL access solutions are available on a variety of service platforms, including the Alcatel ASAM family; the Litespan Next Generation Digital Loop Carrier (NGDLC); and environmentally hardened Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) packages optimized for digital loop carrier deployment. The Alcatel ASAM serves more than 55 percent of the worldwide central office ADSL market. Alcatel's Litespan multi-service access platform has a global embedded footprint of 57 million subscribers and growing.

All Alcatel DSL platforms are commonly managed through a single access element management system. Alcatel's ASAM is New Equipment Standards (NEBS) (Level 3) compliant, allowing it to integrate seamlessly into service provider networks. The Alcatel DSL family is fully scaleable and supports a wide variety of service packages, including asymmetric and symmetric offerings, and can be deployed easily in service provider networks, including collocation environments, providing excellent density, efficient power utilization, and high performance. Alcatel's ADSL solutions support full-rate discrete multi-tone (DMT) ADSL as well as reduced rate G.lite ADSL on a single line card, maximizing a carrier's service options while minimizing costs. Alcatel's DSL technology also is offered in an advanced range of customer premises equipment, the Alcatel SpeedTouch(TM) family of DSL modems, routers, and integrated access devices supporting multi-line voice and data service over a single telephone access line.
