All,

Rob Herb just reported on RadioOnWallstreet that Dresden is currently at 1000 wafer starts per week, and ramping to 2500 by the end of the year.

Elmer,

I think it is quite a disappointment to see that T-Bird plus copper offers very little advantage over Athlon and Al. Bigger die and no significant performance improvement or frequency jump.

And what do you base this statement on? What you see at Frys? ;^)

Jerry Sanders has said that they are on track for 1.5GHz at year's end.

EP,

Do you really like having people jump all over you? You make these silly statements that have no basis in reality.

You own the stock....why continue with the Fud? Dresden will prove to be more than what most expect...you included. So I suggest you learn to live with it.

ted

BTW chic, Dresden is spelled D-R-E-S-D-E-N!

For Tbird, its 10% performance boost and $20 in extra profit per chip.

For copper, its the potential to ramp speeds quickly when the market demands it. The ideal situation would be for some other company with a huge marketing budget to create demand for higher speed grades, and then not be able to deliver. :)

PS- Is your last name Fud?

I'll get you you wascally wabbit!

Elmer,

Bigger die and no significant performance improvement or frequency jump

I frequency jumps will come when they are needed. The lower voltage and lower power consumption suggest there is room for them in the new iteration of the core.

One thing I didn't find in the reviews was the distinction between Dresden and Austin chips in terms of voltages and power consumption.

I think the current market conditions are ideal for AMD. Intel created demand for high MHz product with paper launches, and AMD is very happy to supply the chips. You still can't buy a 1 GHz Piii.

Maybe AMd just doesn't want to wake up the sleeping giant. If AMD released faster parts, Intel would feel obligated to respond with Willamette and release it early. Early Willamette release would upset the equation, even if no parts were ready for sale. It would make marketing side a little more complicated. Right now, it is very simple for AMD. AMD is able to produce the most desirable 1 GHz parts with ease, even with the old core. All we need is some business SKUs to be able to translate the flood of German Panzers (I mean Athlons) into gold.

Elmer,

Bigger die and no significant performance improvement or frequency jump

No significant performance improvement? So a P3 is still faster clock for clock is it? I think not.

You were the one emphasizing the 5% speed difference when P3 had it. Now Athlon is undisputed speed king again.

Correction. My guess is you will try and dispute it.
