Vodafone bullish on wireless, reiterates Verizon spin plan

Chris Gent, CEO of Vodafone AirTouch PLC, said the wireless giant estimates 80 percent of its customer base worldwide will use wireless devices for Internet-based messaging by 2004.

Up to half of the carrier's customers will use wireless terminals for transactions, such as banking and purchasing. Vodafone (VOD: news, msgs) is launching a European Internet portal with France's Vivendi SA (VVDIY: news, msgs) called "Vizzavi."

In addition, Vodafone reiterated plans for an IPO for Verizon Wireless, its recently launched joint wireless operation with Bell Atlantic (BEL: news, msgs), by the end of the year.

Vodafone, seeking further subscriber growth, also is aggressively promoting new services in the U.S. for pre-paid wireless phones and caller payment services. Gent made the remarks during a presentation at Deutsche Bank Alex. Brown's media and telecommunications conference here.
