Do you think the Congress would stand for it? It would cause an uproar and bring gold into sharp focus. I agree that the risk is always there - but you have to think of the mechanics, the politics, and the loss of confidence in the financial system which would ensue. People being arrested? All gold mines being closed in the USA but remaining open elsewhere. Black market dealings. In the Depression there was such a crisis atmosphere that draconian measure were acceptable. I don't think it would happen now. In the Depression the Govt. must have bought all mining production? - so if all mines around the world are not to be closed would all CBs become buyers suddenly?
