Sign Memorandum of Understanding For Two-Way Wireless Data in China Successful Trial Will Bring Commercial Availability Of Wireless Internet and Messaging to Five Cities BEIJING, June 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Glenayre Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq: GEMS - news) and China Guoxin Paging Corp., a division of China Unicom headquartered in Beijing, today announced that the companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to begin a trial of a two-way paging system in five cities in China -- Beijing, Chengdu, Fuzhou, Nanjing, and Qingdao. Guoxin plans to offer two-way services to their subscribers in these cities in October 2000. The two-way paging system will operate over Glenayre's ReFLEX 25 two-way paging network. Additionally, Guoxin will purchase @ctiveLink - Handspring Visor(TM) bundles for use on this network. Glenayre's @ctiveLink is a two-way wireless messaging module that connects seamlessly to the Springboard(TM) external expansion slot on the back of the Handspring Visor. This allows users of the Visor to access internet-based messaging as well as other information applications and, with the Always @ctive(TM) operation of the @ctiveLink and the module's long battery life, the user can have constant connectivity. Guoxin has had a long-standing relationship with Glenayre who has provided the company with the paging infrastructure hardware for both Guoxin's low- and high-speed FLEX paging networks. The company's customer-base currently totals 45 million people and approximately 40 percent of these networks are comprised of Glenayre products. ``Glenayre and Guoxin have worked together for many years developing and building paging systems for the people of China. This latest agreement is very exciting for both our companies as we begin supplying the latest communications technology to the people in these five cities, providing Guoxin customers with a better and easier way to send and retrieve messages, obtain information from the Internet, and communicate with their business associates, friends and family,'' stated Eric Doggett, president and chief executive officer of Glenayre. ``This is yet another example of the global momentum that is building for ReFLEX networks and Glenayre's wireless data products.'' ``We are excited to be working with Glenayre as we move into this new stage of wireless messaging in China. The two-way market is just in its infancy in this country and we know that Glenayre's networks and interactive messaging devices will help Guoxin move quickly and smoothly into the wireless messaging arena,'' stated Mr. Ge Lei, chairman and president of Guoxin.
