hi pw,

mind you, i'm not trying to get rid of the speaker icon. my little dilemma not too long ago was to get it back! <g3> but i was just remarking to ed how ironic it is that some want it and others don't.

so here's that reg hack, and it mentions the conventional method you outlined...

"Start Control Panel, double-click on the Multimedia applet, select the Audio tab, and uncheck the "Show volume control on the taskbar" box with a left click. Click OK. This change should take effect immediately.

But even if you did as shown above to make it disappear, in certain configurations, with some sound cards, third party software, or after installing a new multimedia application or game, the Volume icon misteriously reappears on the Taskbar!
