The media could have covered the rescue and seizure of Elian Gonzalez in a more balanced fashion.
That article, while written with only selected quotes, shows the process of news distillation quite well if you read through the progression of articles. In the beginning the news reports the facts, things like "boy found, mother lost at sea". In most news articles that is where the process stops. This one continued for months, and so the papers (and TV) expand the story, interview everyone they can find, and get analysis from the usual talking heads. It's at this point that the news outlets become a mirror of the public. They put on shows, take polls and ratings, and adjust the show until it matches the public agreement. It's not that the news is biased so much as the public has formed a consensus.
