Well, history is not something independent of the collective opinions of people, and the best scholarship would not give Shakespeare so much credit.........Do you recall the Morte d'Arthur? The relationship between Lancelot and Guinevere was a good example of adulterous courtly love pre- dating Shakespeare. Also, Tristan and Isolde, which was written down in the 12th century. Antony and Cleopatra was a staple of legend, even before Shakespeare, as was Abelard and Heloise. Paris and Helen; Odysseus and Penelope; there were all manner of images of illicit passion and marital affection before Shakespeare......
