As noted, this occurs when a single vendor has monopoly control of a crucial element in the value chain, ... the way Qualcomm appears to do for the future of wireless telephony."

Having seen that, my previous post is apparently and thankfully wrong about Nokia's influence on Moore. Glad to know it.

I'll try not to comment on the book until I've read it and can appreciate everything in context as tekboy suggests.

Tek,

<< dribbling out bits of the new book will not make it easier to comprehend, because the bits will inevitably appear out of context. >>

Understood. Appreciate the introduction however and you have whetted my appetite.

<< "gorilla leader" is not a separate term (it's probably just a sloppy combination of gorilla and market leader) >>

Sounds like it. Makes sense, given the type of book that it is, although on the investment side obviously gorilla has a very specific denotation to us.

<< "...the super grand prize bonanza of tornado market development...[is] gaining value-chain power over the other vendors in the value chain. As noted, this occurs when a single vendor has monopoly control of a crucial element in the value chain, the way Microsoft and Intel each do for the personal computer, the way Cisco does for the Internet, the way Qualcomm appears to do for the future of wireless telephony." (pp. 169-70) >>

Nice to see a Qualcomm "plug".

RE: Living on the Fault Line...

Good old Amazon.com (a stock I won't talk about on this thread) showed up at the door this morning with Geoff's new book (nice blue metallic cover) and Elvis in "Double Trouble". I know it's a bad movie, but my seven year old son cannot get enough of Elvis. That's okay with me. I couldn't get enough of Robert Goulet, Liza and Sinatra at his age.

I never really thought there was any question that i2 was the gorilla of SCM. Maybe reading it in a book will solidify your thoughts. I'm very excited about i2's next decade that is shaping up at the moment. I just received my 'book' full of goodies from i2 to prepare me for the shareholder's meeting and the vote to approve the merger with Aspect Development. However, that's another story and the mother-in-law is arriving soon.
