You're absolutely correct, Herc.. thanks for pointing out how we can easily fall into the trap of dating ourselves. smiles

And one of the interesting twists associated with web acceleration and caching approaches is that they use proxying and IP address re-directs which do not lend themselves to trace routes (tracert) and ping tests which would otherwise be useful in determining actual server connection routes and latency, as well as throughput stats where you can time downloads.

My original question was, how do you know what your actual speed is, and whether or not it is being measured on a very local connection, or a distant one. In light of the AKAM/INKT schemes, however, should one care anymore about such a discrimination as relates to nearness and distance? Maybe for well-appointed web sites, no. For sites owned by less endowed owners and some international ones with no focused intentions of being appealing to local US access, perhaps. I'll need to think about this some more. Thanks for the reminder.
