While I agree that the XAU rally is a little muted, I suspect it is due to a short covering rally in physical bullion that is not carrying over to the gold stocks. I think it will correct itself in the futures market without the need for central banks to "swamp it"

Meanwhile, the great offender in the XAU (aka ABX) just hit a new high for the year, while NEM is 25.75 vs 27.75 on May 4, AU is 21.75 vs. 28.75 earlier in the year.
