I guess since this started in my laundry room, I'll finish it there. I believe that those with the knowledge and the love should have more influence on what is chosen for performance or for museums, etc. Absolutely. But I dislike elitists turning their nose up at someone who takes pleasure in an inferior print, or an unusual placemnt in the home. Great art can inspire, is still great art, even if not displayed at its absolute best. And even mediocre art can "work" for some. And sometimes I could just shoot the writers of reviews who slam performers or shows for the most elitist and obscure reasons. I'm having a real conflict with this personally because the church where I had been singing-- and it's a very large church and one would think would have a good music program- NEVER does anything that I consider quality. I tried really really hard to be accepting- but I can sing pop gospel for only a brief time before both my voice and my brain object. And it's so hard to know what to say- I like the people so much, but can't believe that they have such a limited approach to music. When I sang the Mozart Alleluia, they made me "audition" for the minister and then had this huge debate on whether the congregation could "handle" it. The Mozart Alleluia is a wonderful coloratura piece that is VERY "accessible". BTW, the response to it was terrific.BUt they've never asked me to sing classical again. I don't believe our children are being exposed to the best in music anymore, partially becuase of the overconcern for separation of church and state (I think music should be exempt!)and partially because they all insist on mikes and oh lord- my pet peeve- taped accompaniments-- and making the kids happy with fun pop stuff. Everything has to have visual stimulation, dance, costumes, themes... no one ever seems to do just GOOD MUSIC. So I see the church as one of the last bastions where the great composers can still find an audience, and young people can be exposed. That isn't happening. At least here. SO I am torn as you can see... I think what you're saying about art is what I am feeling about music. You want to protect what is good, and it's hard to do that without sounding snotty or affected or presumptuous sometimes. Maybe it's worth being seen that way in order to prevent the complete loss of what we believe is the greatest of human achievement to the shallow and easy.
