RE:"Jim, I believe the success of AMD and it Athlon processor caught Intel off guard (how dare that upstart company challenge that Goliath of a corporation). AMD has caused Intel to race forward with some not so well thought out plans."

Intel lays their roadmap out here for everyone to see so it was just a matter of time until someone picked off Intels strengths, MHz, yield/cost and FPU. OTOH, Intels greatest blunder was the planned shift to Rambus and the i820 chipset coupled with the lack of a 133 Mhz, 4 AGP version of there best chipset, the BX.
A few years back, with the avent of the MediaGX (first sub-$1000 PC)and then Brian Hallas braindeadication (sic) to the integrated chip, Intel suckered itself into Timna...that probably was the point where Intel began to scramble and try to cover all bases. I suppose they had so much money they didn't know what to do with it...now they are in danger of flushing some of it down the toilet.
Have to wonder if a Timna intro in 2001 will fly when Willy and Mustang are around 1400+ Mhz...Duron between 700 and 1000 Mhz...and Coppermine at about the same...and with a small die.
