SP Outlook June 3rd --AMKOR Tech
The shares (AMKR,51,5 Stars, Quality ranking:NR) of this leading provider of contract semiconductor packaging and test services have been extremely volatile in recent months, as prospects for higher interest rates and slower economic growth have spooked tech-stock investors. Thought still up sharply for the year, the shares were recently trading more than 30% off thier 52-week high. Despite the volatility, we continue to believe that fundamentals for Amkor remain exceptionally strong. Rising chip demand and a growing trend toward manufacturing outsourcing are two big positives.
Amkor has agressively raised its capital spending plans in recent quarters to ensure that it has adquate capacity to meet the acticipated explosion in demand. While this move is likey to slightly crimp near-term operating margain growth, it will also position the company to capture market share and meet its customers' needs. We look for cash earnings per share (excluding goodwill amortization charges) of $2.15 in '01, up 36% from our estimate of $1.58 for '00. At just 21 times the projection for 2001, we believe the stock is undervalued, given the company's effective execution of its business plan.
