Wind River Displays Leading Java Technologies at JavaOne, Eases Development of Smart, Connected Devices
Numerous Partner Solutions, Innovative Customer Products Validate Wind River's Key Role in Extending Java Platform
SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 6, 2000-- Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND - news), a leading provider of software and services for smart devices in the Internet age, showcased its integral role in the advancement of embedded Java technology at the JavaOne Conference today. The company is featuring its market-leading Personal JWorks(TM) application as well as its groundbreaking, Java-based Tornado© for Internet Appliances architecture (see separate Wind River June 5, 2000, release announcing Tornado for Internet Appliances) in product demonstrations at the conference (Booth No. 122). Sun Microsystems, Inc., is also showcasing Wind River technology-based products, including those of goReader, Pingtel, Tadpole-RDI, TeraLogic, Inc., and Tridium, Inc., in a Java product display on the Connector Concourse. In addition, over 20 Wind River partners with Java solutions that extend the Wind River product line will be exhibiting at the conference.
Recent studies demonstrate Wind River's market leadership in Java-enabled operating systems (OSs) with almost 50% of all Java-based projects running Wind River OSs (VxWorks© OS 37%; pSOS© OS 11%) (VDC). In addition, Wind River has been selected as a member of the Java Community Process (JCP) Executive Committee (EC), sharing with Sun and other EC members the responsibility for the continued rapid adoption and evolution of Java technology (see separate Sun Microsystems June 1, 2000 announcement for more details).
``Our cutting-edge customers have shown us that one of the fundamental design trends is that Java has a significant momentum in Internet appliances and consumer device development in general,'' said J.C. Sarner, vice president and general manager of Wind River's Consumer business unit. ``The Integrated Systems merger and the acquisition of Audesi have brought us the unparalleled engineering services capability of Doctor Design and have added more depth to our Java expertise. This allows Wind River to deliver innovative products and superb services that, when combined, bring customers to market faster than in-house efforts or other embedded software vendors.''
``Wind River understands the unique requirements of next-generation applications and is committed to delivering the best Java implementations possible to our customers,'' said John Fogelin, vice president and general manager of Wind River's Platforms business unit. ``We have been working with Sun to optimize Java technology for the embedded world since its introduction in 1995. We are in the JCP EC, our Java products are leading the market and winning awards, and our 600 WindLink(TM) partners extend our product offerings even further. No single company can match the breadth of embedded technology expertise Wind River brings to developers using Java.''
State-of-the-Art Java Technology
The number of embedded devices shipping with Java virtual machines is expected to soar from 298,000 in 1999 to 24.3 million by 2003 (VDC). As technology advances, developers can include applications once seen only on the desktop, such as e-mail clients and Internet access, in embedded smart devices. However, these next-generation applications have unique and very strict requirements that are orders of magnitude higher than typical desktop Java-based applications.
Since the introduction of the Java platform, Wind River has led the efforts to adapt Java technology for use in embedded smart devices. It continues to play a strong role in the advancement of Java technology, as demonstrated by the large number of Wind River customers producing actual Java-based products, as well as the release of the Tornado for Internet Appliances architecture. Companies such as goReader, Inc., Invensys Network Systems, Pingtel, Tadpole-RDI, Tridium, Inc., and others have used Wind River's Java implementations for a wide range of applications, including e-books, industrial controllers, and car navigation systems.
As further recognition of Wind River's Java expertise, several Wind River Java technologies have been selected as finalists in the Java Technology Achievement Awards, including the Personal JWorks application and products from recently-acquired AudeSi Technologies. These innovative technologies from AudeSi provide some of the key elements in Wind River's newly introduced Internet appliance solution product, Tornado for Internet Appliances. In addition, the Pingtel xpressa VoIP phone, designed and built using Wind River's Java-based technology, is a finalist in the best Java/client interface category.

Customer Quote Addendum
``When goReader started to develop an e-book device that would provide an entirely new way for college students to read, study, and learn we faced numerous challenges. The Java language provided the best solution for our device and e-commerce requirements but we needed to implement it in the small, resource-constrained environment of an Internet appliance. By using Wind River's Java products and VxWorks RTOS, we were able to quickly develop a unique lightweight e-textbook that will enhance and ease the learning experience for college students everywhere. We would not hesitate to use Wind River for our future projects.''
Rich Katzmann, chairman and CEO, goReader, Inc. ``As a provider of intelligent control systems for markets ranging from home appliances to network systems, Invensys is committed to developing the best solutions possible for our customers. We chose Wind River because of their position in the marketplace -- we knew that they had the resources and know-how to deliver optimized Java products for our development needs. We felt confident that we could purchase technology from Wind River and get started right away in our development cycle and if we had any questions along the way they would have the resources to answer those questions and help us get our product out the door.''
John Sharood, vice president network systems, Invensys Network Systems ``Creating a cutting-edge delivery platform for next-gen voice services and applications is filled with challenges -- time to market demands, complexity, cost restraints, etc. Pingtel xpressa is the world's first Java voice-over-IP phone and is truly a next-generation, intelligent, connected appliance. Wind River's leading technology played a key role in shrinking our development cycle and allowing us to deliver a unique product to market before any of our competition. Wind River not only provides superior technology, but also shares our goal -- to provide customers with innovative, revolutionary products for the Internet age.''
Jay Batson, CEO, Pingtel ``Tadpole chose Wind River for the J-Slate, a rugged wireless pen computer/Internet appliance, because we were familiar with their products, and because they know the ins-and-outs of how to implement Java technology in embedded environments better than anyone else out there. The combination of their proven products and field and technical support was really key to helping us get our product to market successfully. We were able to focus on our core value-add and rapidly prototype and deploy a complex enterprise solution for applications in industries ranging from utilities, retail, and manufacturing to government and healthcare.''
Bernard Hulme, CEO, Tadpole-RDI ``As a provider to industry-leading systems integrators for energy services and commercial control applications, our customers expect us to deliver unique solutions for their needs. We chose Wind River's Java solutions because they provided the best implementation of Java technology for a real-time, embedded environment. We needed to develop an extremely complex application -- one that would give our customers a fully Internet-enabled, distributed architecture that allowed them to not only extract a multitude of data from various remotely located devices but also manage the devices and data. By using Wind River we knew we were getting proven products so we could focus on what we do really well and deliver a revolutionary product to market.''
