Alcatel and Portal Software Forge a Global Alliance for IP Billing; Deliver Turnkey IP and Data Billing Solutions

BusinessWire, 06/6/2000 14:01

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 6, 2000--Alcatel (NYSE:ALA), a world leader in DSL and Optical Networking solutions and Portal Software Inc. (NASDAQ:PRSF), a leading provider of business infrastructure software for Internet and next-generation communications services, today announced a global alliance for Internet Protocol (IP) billing. As part of the alliance agreement, Alcatel will market, distribute, integrate and deploy customer care and billing solutions for worldwide IP and data telecommunications service providers, based on Portal's IP billing solution, Infranet(R).

The alliance is a unique combination of Alcatel's global presence as an IP infrastructure supplier and a turnkey OSS system integrator for multivendor networks, together with Portal's globally established position as the leading supplier of real-time customer management and billing platforms for Internet and next generation communication services.

"Alcatel's proven expertise in integrating customer management and billing solutions worldwide, combined with its leading position in key technologies such as Asymetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) and Local Multipoint Distribution System (LMDS), provides Portal with additional opportunities to rapidly extend its coverage of the global IP billing market for Telcos and IP Service Providers," said Jill Kyte, vice president, Strategic Alliances at Portal Software.

Worldwide Internet usage is projected to continue growing with an expanding range of sophisticated applications and services. Service providers who can link customers, services and revenues in real-time with Portal Infranet software can gain an advantage in attracting and retaining customers in this highly competitive market.

The Internet has transitioned from a global information access technology to a mission critical business toolset. Integrating the customer care and billing system as the cornerstone of a fully integrated information system is the only way to provide the service flexibility and guarantee "carrier grade" quality and support that customers expect from service providers.

"Portal's offering is a key component of our end-to-end IP management strategy," said Jean-Pierre Gaillat, vice president of Alatel's Operations Support Systems (OSS) activities. "Portal's Infranet is one of the leading IP customer care and billing products on the market and is ideally suited for our ALMA Vision IP Service Assurance offer. This alliance further establishes Alcatel as a leader in providing complete OSS solutions to the IP market."
