No one I think has ever questioned his talent. There have always been those who say that Avedon's noncommercial work is often cheaply sensationalist, going for shock value (as in the American West photos of blood-spattered slaughterhouse workers and cattle heads, the photo of the napalm victim from his Vietnam work, the series he did on his father dying of cancer etc.). I myself don't think so, I think this genre of his work is stark and deeply disturbing, but not trying to shock merely for the sake of sensation.
