Jim, re: <Meanwhile, for your reading enjoyment:>
But that ignores the fact that DDR266 has a much lower DDR clock rate than PC800.
(266mHz vs 800mHz).
Consequently, DDR has a much wider data "eye", and is much less susceptible to noise. One of the advantages of a wide bus for bandwidth. Not to say it's not an issue.

Jim, re: <After all Jerry Saunders does not think it is relevant this year.>
I think I've already indicated I agree. IMO, this year's big news will be PC133 and i815E. (BTW, it's Sanders, not Saunders). I think Next year will tell the DDR/Rambus story.

Jim, re: <Yes, they keep saying this about DDR and the introduction time keeps jumping another 6 month into the future.>

As far as I know, predictions are for chip sets in Q3, systems available Q4. (From all the roadmaps I've seen). Have to wait and see, I guess. <g>

And if you like predictions, how about our friends at Intel? From the Spring IDF:

In fact, in the first quarter of this year, we will ship over two million of our 820 chipsets into the marketplace. This is a volume platform. It's ramping. It's real.

There's been a lot of industry debate and discussion around this. Clearly we've had some technical issues to overcome. Now, those issues are resolved, industry support is rerallying, and you see several of the quotes from the largest DRAM suppliers here, from NEC, Samsung, and Toshiba.

We know now most were with MTH, and you know that story.

The Timna processor will begin with SDRAM. SDRAM platforms will be shipping at very high volume in the second half of this year.
