Dan,

I've done a little testing on 30 minute charts. 10/16 and 5/16 were periods that looked interesting, but not consistently better than 60 min. charts so I shelved that idea for now.

Dan,

No, I never did do the test you suggested. I don't have good access to intra-day data, and that hampers my tests. I can't tell you exactly how I came to the 5e/8s concept, but I sort of tripped over it. I was looking for a faster trigger and, of course, the EMA was just what I was looking for.

My experience with the shorter bars isn't very conclusive. I don't want to watch tick trading (in fact I can't), so I try to make do with an alternative.

Dan, I also have MyTrack (AIQ charting software) and for the 30 minute intra-day charts I use:

11 ST Esa
18 IT Ma

This setting gives a result that looks just like the 1 hour 5/8 charts on my AIQ real time alert service.....and pretty close to the timely charts, with the exception of after-hours effects on the AIQ charts.
If you have not tried AIQ a month trial might be a good investment. I have been fine tuning my MA crossover alerts with a few others (the more reasons to take a position, the better).

I also find it useful to use the trendline drawing function to highlight areas of support, and also fib retrace levels.

That being said, I too have been whipsawed so much this week my neck feels like I have been watching a tennis match!!
