She growled and jerked [the briefcase] back ... That must have been in the early '80s when a lot of professional women were wearing suits and those fluffy bowties a la Tootsie. I remember at about that time holding open a door for such a woman and getting a severe scowl and an under- the-breath "Oh, dear" muttering. I think that experience remains in the back of my mind, because I'm always relieved to hear a polite "thank you" when I hold open a door for a woman.
