Ratbert Re <<Do you think heat production is becoming a more important limiting factor in CPU design?>>

Well, it is a lot more relevant than it was before, but it is not really an important "limiting factor". The problem is not really the absolute heat dissipation, it is rather the power density and the geometrical limitation of the package.

It is difficult to manage 50+ Watt coming from only a cm^2 area utilizing one 2.5 X 2.5 X 2.0 package costing a total of $13. The challenge for the thermal management industry is more in the package design which needs to be compact and inexpensive.

Merced is pushing 200 Watts! Now that is a problem!
