Evaluator Group Announces Availability of New Publication for Storage Professionals Dealing with Open Systems Storage

DENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 7, 2000--Evaluator Group, a Denver-based computer industry analysis organization specializing in disk storage, today announced immediate availability of a new reference manual for storage professionals who deal with open systems storage.

Open Systems I/O, a part of The Evaluator Series of technical publications, is a two hundred-page document primarily targeted to individuals who may have mainframe storage experience and are now challenged by the additional responsibility.

"In this time of greater than 100% compound annual growth rate (in some cases quarterly growth rate), most of which is going into Storage Area Networks (SAN), Network Attached Storage (NAS) and direct attachment to Unix and NT systems, a critical limiting factor is the shortage of people with an understanding of open systems storage. This publication is intended to help storage professionals adapt their prior experience in mainframes to open storage in a hurry," commented Jack Scott, Managing Partner.

The publication, which features 178 charts, graphs and pictures, is divided into nine chapters and a comprehensive glossary:

Chapter 1. What are Open Systems? provides an introduction to the definition of open systems and systems categorization in general.

Chapter 2. What is meant by Open Systems I/O: describes the layered I/O structure used in open systems and the characteristics of each layer.

Chapter 3. Interfaces and Connectivity: describes the I/O interfaces used by open systems and the particular characteristics of each interface.

Chapter 4. Storage Devices: gives an overview of many of the storage devices used in open systems and introduces the concept of Storage Area Networks.

Chapter 5. Clustering: describes clustering usage in general for Open Systems and explains the connection alternatives for storage systems.

Chapter 6. How Windows 2000 does I/O: describes the methods and usage of I/O for both Windows 2000 and its NT predecessor.

Chapter 7. Windows 2000 I/O Performance: is an explanation of performance monitoring that is available with the base system and the system characteristics regarding I/O performance.

Chapter 8. Windows 2000 Cluster I/O: is a short description of the variation Windows brings to clustering.

Chapter 9. How UNIX does I/O: provides an overview of the I/O mechanisms in UNIX systems in general.

Randy Kerns, Evaluator Group's Partner in charge of SANs practice who is the principal author of Open Systems I/O, stated that: "This book incorporates several years of my experience in open storage. Users who have seen drafts and excerpts agree that this book will be an invaluable reference document for all open storage administrators. This is the only publication of its type in existence."

Open Systems I/O (OSIO-0001-1) is available directly from Evaluator Group. It can be ordered by credit card from the Company's Website at www.evaluatorgroup.com (Publications), by calling Susan Dunn at 303/221-7867 or e-mailing Susan@evaluatorgroup.com.
