Mandela spent over 25 years as a political prisoner in South Africa and eventually became the elected president of that country. That is an impressive accomplishment and strong validation for racial equality and the democratic process in an area of the world that is frequently in turmoil.
He was also a symbol for the anti-apartheid movement which generated social activism on US campuses which forced the divestiture by many institutions in South African investments. This brought to many peoples consciousness the
concept of socially responsible investing.
There was also a backlash in the US and Europe against performers who appeared in South African venues.
Mandela was a symbol for a movement embraced by many young Americans who came of age too late for such social issues as US civil rights and the antiVietnam war protests.

As an aside, if I was constructing a list similar to yours I would find it necessary to include more "lions" from outside North America and Europe. That said, I know this is your list and not mine.
