Mani - 12 Months ago AMD faced a problematic future. The Athlon had to be a serious success for it to survive as an independent. They faced nasty debt, weak marketing, a history of weak execution and an about to be opened plant in Dresden that might or might not escape the "execution blues" that plagued them up to then. I remember writing that they had a narrow space to walk through and it would take near perfect performance to come through unscatheed. As it turned out their execution has been rather good (and Intel's has been rather poor) in that period. So they have now walked through the shadow of the valley of death and into the valley of competitive survivor. And richly rewarded those folks astute enough and brave enough to understand that the landscape had changed. I have publicly congratulated the folks on the AMD thread for their insight and good fortune.

AMD has taken a gamble and won. For that it and its investors deserve credit. Some would argue that they had to take that gamble to survive and I would agree. There is now a horserace with two serious entrants and the battle is joined. Both companies should make mucho dinero over the next 2 - 4 years. There have been no signs of a scorched earth price war and the innovative juices of both companies are working overtime.

At various times, tempers have risen and words were typed that were intemperate. Certainly, there are few saints on either side of aisle. Sarcasm, name-calling, epithets and taunting have been seen from both sides. Big time.

That said, these threads have been informative and entertaining beyond belief. I have been the beneficiary of the exchange by the early, spirited and knowledgeable discussions of the issues. I have even made a buck or two off of the info here. A free exchange of ideas has many benefits to a democracy and to an investor. I carefully read virtually every AMDroid's contribution for both the solid info (which is useful) and the manic hostility (which is entertaining). Ultimately I form my own ideas based on all my sources of info and my instincts and I am solely responsible for my own decisions.

Good investing,
Burt

Re: "If you go back and check the AMD thread from 12 months ago you will notice that there were plenty of people who predicted AMD's imminent demise. What is worse is that they got very rude and personal to all AMD longs. Lots of them are still posting on this thread."

The abuse was a two way street. It's nice to see that it has toned down lately.
