Gore panders to day care families - at a day care accused of slapping kids around - abuser accused of being a Republican and setting Gore up:

RED-FACED GORE AIDES RUE GAFFE

By DEBORAH ORIN

Vice President Al Gore yesterday made a pitch for safer kiddie day care - but did it at a posh East Side toddler school accused of child abuse in a lawsuit.
"We were not aware of the suit. If we'd known about the suit, we would not have done the event there," said Gore campaign spokesman Doug Hattaway.

"It was a mistake, obviously, not to know," added Hattaway, who said the Children's All Day School on East 60th Street was picked because it "could accommodate a crowd."

The Democratic presidential candidate, wife Tipper and pal Rosie O'Donnell went to the photo op co-starring cute tots at the pricey school, which denies the abuse charges and is seeking to get the suit dismissed.

In April, two assistant teachers filed suit, charging they were fired for revealing a colleague smacked toddlers.

The papers charge a fellow teacher who weighs nearly 300 pounds often smacked kids so hard "their feet would leave the ground."

The Post and the Associated Press reported on the suit in April and some Democratic strategists groaned at the unnecessary embarrassment that Gore could have avoided if his staff had checked.
