The matter is not about product sales; it's about adoption of technology or origination of same. Europe is, and has decided to remain, far behind in wireless data transfer. If CDMA had originated in Taiwan or India, Europe's attitude would be the same. Not invented here. Speaking as a Canadian, a non-American, I'd like you to note that Europe has no institution with the high level of Stanford, MIT, or Caltech. There's a reason why most of the important advances in science and technology are being made in the U.S.
