JG, that's a good point. however, since the BoJ is now finally independent, it may not care about the political back scratching exercises. it can't be Japan's sole purpose in life to help keep the US asset bubble afloat.
still, they've been doing it for years...i remember when Hashimoto made noises in '97 about Japan possibly selling US treasuries and buying some gold (the famous "you have the house, we hold the mortgage" speech) he was quickly brought to heel.
