Solar PV's are not a good reference point. They work in the
visible. For light powered things in fiber data communications, the simplest "converter" of light to electrons is the PIN photodiode. At 1300 nm, the responsivity of PINs is ~0.5uA/uW. So, lets go thru a simple thought design with some parameters. A typical
Intermediate Reach laser injector might be 0dBm, ie. 1 milliwatt, and that would be quite "hot". So, at the receiving end, we split off the "converter" photons, say 10%
of what is left after transmission, and we might have 10 uW
of photons. That gets us 5 uA of current. At 5V, typical for TTL logic, we have 25 uW of power to use for something.
What can you power up and run at 25 uW ??
