Looking at the anti-Second Amendment arguments it's easy to see why people indulge in conspiracy theories. "They can't be that stupid", one thinks, "so there must be some ulterior motive involved. That once this hidden agenda is known it will make sense." Actually, sadly, I believe yes they are that stupid -Occam's Razor.
